What’s happened to American tennis?

Fish is almost certain to be the in-form player among an aging group of injury racked former champions, untested newcomers and under-achievers

MONTREAL: Mardy Fish will never be seen as the saviour of American tennis but the 29-year-old is ready to step up and carry the flag into the US Open later this month if no one else will.
That Fish, the winner of six titles but no grand slams, is the likely standard-bearer for the US at Flushing Meadows as the top ranked American does not say so much about his improved play this season as it does about the decline of the sport in the United States.

Chelsea target Luka Modric insists he is ‘still waiting’ outcome of Tottenham future but hopes Robbie Keane remains at club.

Luka Modric has revealed he is still waiting to hear over whether his future lies with Tottenham following months of speculation surrounding a desired move to Chelsea.
The Croatian international has been linked with moves to Chelsea and Manchester United, with the Blues having a bid in the region of £25 million rejected by Spurs.
When asked about his future Modric would not been drawn on the talk but he hoped that a resolution would be quickly found.
'I don't want to talk about that. I said before what I think and that's it,' he told RTE Sport.
'I said a lot of things before and still everything is the same at the moment. I will see, I'm still waiting.'
The midfielder also praised club team-mate Robbie Keane and is hopeful the veteran striker will stay at White Hart Lane despite rumours of him being surplus to requirement in North London.
Speaking after winning his 48th cap in the 0-0 draw in Dublin last night, Modric said: 'Robbie showed that he is a great player. He showed tonight how important he is for Ireland. He is a great lad as well.
'I would like him to stay but I know he wants to play. If that is not possible at Tottenham, he will probably try to find other options but I would like him to stay and to play for us.
'He's a great player, what can I say, I don't know what will happen.

It’s that time of year again! The new football season is upon us and below you will find my predictions on what will happen in Europe’s top four leagues over the next 10 months. One thing is for sure. There should be plenty of dramatic twists and turns in England, Germany, Italy and Spain. So here we go:

These riots are nuts: Rooney

LONDON: English football officials were to meet police here Tuesday amid calls for the international against the Netherlands to be cancelled following a third day of rioting in London.

The 15-man tour party includes four inexperienced pacemen in Sohail Tanveer, Sohail Khan, Aizaz Cheema and Junaid Khan – a strategy Wasim fears may backfire on Pakistan.

Romeu: Wants to prove a success at Stamford Bridge
Oriol Romeu has targeted success at Chelsea, but would also like to return to Barcelona in the future.
The 19-year-old defensive midfielder this week joined the Blues on a four-year contract and will link up with Andre Villas-Boas' men at the end of Spain's Under-20 World Cup campaign in Colombia.
Barca confirmed Chelsea had paid €5million (£4.35m) for Romeu, with the deal including a buy-back clause of €10m after one year and €15m after two.

Regarding the possibility of one day returning to the Nou Camp, Romeu said: "You never know what can happen in the future. I will always support Barca and hopefully someday I can return there.
"But, right now, what I want is to succeed at Chelsea and be well there."
Romeu, who made his first-team debut for Barca at the end of last season before being deemed surplus to requirements by coach Pep Guardiola, will help fill the void at Chelsea left by the injured Michael Essien, who is set to be sidelined for six months.
The 6ft Romeu will also provide competition for midfield anchorman John Obi Mikel, while he can also play at centre-half.
Romeu is hoping to learn a lot at Stamford Bridge, adding in quotes reported by the Spanish press: "They (Chelsea) have players of enormous quality. The coach is also of a very high level and what I want to do is continue improving as a player there."
